The basic plot isn't terribly interesting, but it's racial politics are . . . it's unfortunate that Franklin and Washington never got to make a film series with this character as I have a feeling that it would be one of the rare times a sequel would improve upon the original.

Denzel does hokum in a very silly mystery that involves Jennifer Beals in a blue dress and a whole bunch of leaps of faith in plot.

It's not the most exciting or interesting movie out there, and I noticed a homage or two to Chinatown, but thanks to a reliable story, some good acting, and, above all, impeccable direction from Carl Franklin, Devil In A Blue Dress is an enjoyable watch. It's a worthy addition to the neo-noir genre.
