Critics Consensus: Wimpy Kid Gets Picked On

Plus, The Bounty Hunter and Repo Men get the thumbs down as well.

This week at the movies, we've got a scheming tween (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, starring Zachary Gordon and Steve Zahn); squabbling exes (The Bounty Hunter, starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler); and hazardous healthcare (Repo Men, starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker). What do the critics have to say?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

It's a (debatable) maxim that the book is always better than the movie. That certainly seems to be the case with Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which critics say contains moments of insight and humor but never fleshes out its middle school characters with the same empathy as Jeff Kinney's books. The movie stars Zachary Gordon as a kid who can't catch a break with the popular crowd, so he tries out various activities in order to climb the social ladder -- all the while chronicling his life in a journal. The pundits say Wimpy Kid accurately captures the uncertainties of the junior high years, but also features abrupt tonal shifts and a story that apes others of its ilk.

The Bounty Hunter

Given the right material, Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler are charming folks. Unfortunately, critics say The Bounty Hunter is decidedly the wrong material -- clichéd, shrill, and lacking an ounce of chemistry between its usually winning leads. Butler plays a former cop who's now a bounty hunter, and his latest assignment is bringing in his bail-jumping ex-wife. Will these crazy kids bicker? Will they relight the spark that brought them together in the first place? Can we expect a little of both, perhaps? Yes, say pundits, along with a shortage of laughs and smarts. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Aniston's best-reviewed films.)

Repo Men

Alex Cox's Repo Man is one of the 1980s' wildest cult classics, mixing punk rock, aliens, and... Wait, wrong movie. Repo Men, critics say, is a satirical misfire that mixes slasher and sci-fi tropes but never makes the most of its unhinged premise. The plot: a corporation called the Union manufactures perfect artificial organs, but if transplant recipients get behind on their payments, "repo men" reclaim the organs by force. One such repo man is Jude Law, is Jude Law, who has trouble making his payments when he gets his own artificial heart... and... you can see where this is going. The pundits say Repo Men shows flashes of perverse wit, but ultimately squanders its cast on generic chase sequences and oodles of gore.

Three new wide releases, and all of 'em suck. Eh.

On a brighter note, though, I got to see The Runaways last week at a screening. It was solid, solid stuff. Shannon and Stewart were both incredible, and Fanning was good. It it turns rotten, I'm shooting myself.

Eh. Another weekend that Alice will rule if they can't come out with anything good. Both The Bounty Hunter and Repo Men looked like they could be interesting if done right. I guess they weren't.

Looks like I'll be staying home until How to Train Your Dragon (depending on the score) and Clash of the Titans.

Yeah, surprises: wide release movies are lame, crap designed for the mooing masses. I'll finally catch Greenberg next week, and only this week the Last Station arrives in Miami.

Wow, The Bounty Hunter is terrible. Who saw that coming?

Butler and Aniston have no chemistry? What? How could this happen?

I'll spend the next week at home watching the Iron Man 2 and Tron Legacy trailer over and over again. Clash needs to hurry up.

I thought that "Repo: The Genetic Opera" would be a way better movie if it were taken seriously, didn't have singing, and didn't have Paris Hilton. Clearly I was wrong. But I might see "Repo Men" depending on how you guys favor it. Could be a guilty pleasure . . .

Anyway, "The Bounty Hunter". Congrats. You can out your shovel down, you've buried the romantic comedy. No, no, no. "Did You Hear About the Morgans" killed the genre. "Valentines Day" grave robbed it of it's goods, "Leap Year" pissed on it's grave, and you, "The Bounty Hunter", raped ir's rotting corpse, you filthy, disgusting, putrid, vile, ugly, nasty, awful, bastard offspring of the last horrible romance movie Aniston did, "Love Happens". Or perhaps, the last rom-com with Butler, "The Ugly Truth". Who knows. You're a bastard. Now bomb. Bomb! BOMB AT THE BOX-OFFICE!!!

Not surprised with any of these scores, but seems like Repo Men could have been interesting had it been made by better creative forces.

Repo Men: EXACT COPY of Repo! The Genetic Opera, but just without singing I suppose. Thought it looked intriguing but heck I really like the Opera. Bounty Hunter ughhhhhhhhhhhh
and Diary can wait for TV. Will catch The Runaways this week and Alice. Clash really has to come out already and if weeks like these continue, my lust for the summer season beginning just gets here already.

I thought Repo Men would be good, and I didn't expect THAT low a score for Bounty Hunter, though I knew it would be rotten. We've been really getting some terrible scores this year for the rom-com (All About Steve, Leap Year, The Ugly Truth, Valentines Day all scored under 20%) Please, please let this have killed the genere, and Gerard Butler HAS to make a good film (he hasn't made one since Rock N' Rolla) , and stop picking this crappy film because the guy does have good screen charisma, and is very likeable, else he's screwed.
Same goes for Aniston.
Runaways looks pretty good, check it out when I can.

I forgot the Inception and Kick-ass trailers to. Gerard Butler is wasted on these rom-coms and seems to be making bad movie choices. Since 300 I can only think of Law Abiding Citizen as being a good choice. Whats next for Butler, maybe the new Muppet movie.

Okay, guys, quick question:

Does the whole premise of Repo Men just seem, i don't know, retarded to anyone besides me? I mean its basically the anti-hero has tables turned on him after a life of wrong (you know, Riddick) but the fact that they're basically messing with transplanted organs....and people's inability to pay for them.....so bascially, the poor getting screwed over by Big Medicine? And people thought that having the protagonists start off as organ collectors would be a good idea? Based on recent events, it would be like making a movie based on the premise of "Bank executives LOVED getting rich by foreclosing homes, until THEY lost all of their money, so now they have to fight the "real" bad guys!" So...what...we're supposed to root for them while they get their houses back?

But then again, i could be completely wrong about this movie & Jude Law's character might really hate himself for killing people who can't afford the treatments that they received but says nothing until he becomes one of them, in which case i STILL don't really care what happens to him.
