The title may assume that the series will Die Another Day, but to me, it just flat-lined.

This is a train wreck of an action film -- a stupefying attempt by the filmmakers to force-feed James Bond into the mindless XXX mold and throw 40 years of cinematic history down the toilet in favor of bright flashes and loud bangs.

James Bond gets bad news in Die Another Day: They've rescinded his license to kill. The news is worse for us. They've given him license to bore.

Adding to the grimness: The title song is from Madonna, a dreary bit of lightweight electro-pop that goes on and on to little effect.

As one clunky explosion piles on another, you picture how much more fun it would be if we could just watch Austin's version of the mayhem in, say, Shag Another Day.

Die Another Day comes at a time when the marketplace is already full of action-heavy spy movies, some of which out-Bond James Bond.

Die Another Day never escapes the urge to play with everything that's come before it -- so much so that it forgets to give us something of its own. This isn't a Bond film so much as an amalgamation of Bond's greatest hits...

A midrange series entry that sports some tasty scenes, mostly in the first half, but also pushes 007 into CGI-driven, quasi-sci-fi territory that feels like a betrayal of what the franchise has always been about.

Die Another Day is only intermittently entertaining but it's hard not to be a sucker for its charms, or perhaps it's just impossible not to feel nostalgia for movies you grew up with.

There is enough for the Bond fan to like and enough for a critic to dislike.

An old Bond for a new century, in which 50-year-old Brosnan, just starting to show his age, has to share time with an amazing glut of awful CGI.

The spy whom we all loved is looking less human and more like a videogame character. . . . Die Another Day is Just Another Bond for the attention-deficit generation.

The film is so fraught with explosions and chases that the action eventually feels numbing.

The problem for me is that the story is so entirely at the service of the special effects.

I can't figure out the folks behind the James Bond franchise. They keep making noise about wanting to update or inject more life into the series, but continually fall short in frustratingly obvious ways.
