Movie Info

In many ways the German equivalent of Running on Empty, Die Innere Sicherheit takes a dramatic look at the difficulties faced by the child of fugitives. Teenaged Jeanne (Julia Hummer) has lived in hiding all her life as the daughter of ex-terrorists. Her family lives in Portugal and plans to permanently leave Europe for Brazil, but when their money is burgled, Jeanne and her parents must return to Germany with hopes of acquiring some cash from their past associates. They find shelter in an abandoned house with the help of Heinrich (Bilge Bingul), a young man with whom Jeanne discovers a mutual attraction. As her parents struggle to gather funding from their old friends, who are now respectable society members eager to disavow their past activities, Jeanne begins to crave a more normal life -- complete with people, cool clothes, and a boyfriend.

Audience Reviews for The State I am In (Die Innere Sicherheit)

It certainly is an acquired taste but it follows an interesting family drama that is entirely unique to Germany. Christian Petzold as a methodical and observational style that can be powerful even if it is not what American audiences are often accustomed to.

Slow moving and rather uneventful drama about a family on the run. Julia Hummer takes center stage as the rebellious teenager and does a believable job, but not a whole lot happens in this tale. Interesting from the standpoint you want to see how the story concludes. Well it does so rather abruptly, but not before you tortured through two hours of viewing.
