Movie Info

Brian Springer's offbeat documentary The Disappointment: Or, the Force of Credulity journeys to a rural locale in Missouri christened the Austin Farm. The milieu in question allegedly conceals several long-buried (and long-lost) treasures, including enigmatic carvings laid in stone, Civil War-era silver, the gold of a Spanish explorer, obscure texts, and a treasure allegedly used by a wife to heal her husband and provide sanctity for her children and herself. With The Disappointment, Springer simultaneously bears witness to the search for these specific treasures and taps into two longstanding American cultural traditions: the folk magic that encouraged and enabled communion with spirits, and the longstanding American mythos attached to searching for gold, which became so prevalent in Mormon teachings about the sacred golden tablets.

The Disappointment: Or, the Force of Credulity is either an inept documentary or a wacky satire. Take your pick, because I'll be darned if I know the answer.

Brian Springer's bizarre documentary The Disappointment: Or, the Force of Credulity is, among many things, a treatise on how history is passed along.
