Critic Reviews for Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: The Day Of The Doctor

  • The great joy of The Day Of The Doctor is seeing the various incarnations of the Time Lord interact. Both Matt Smith and the returning David Tennant are in fine form, and the 10th and 11th Doctors prove to be a very funny double act.

  • We could do an entire recap just talking about their memorable interactions and quoting all their snappy dialogue, and generally fawning over how great they worked together.

  • A fantastic finale, plenty of fan-pleasing homages and an all-round fun escapade meant that, fittingly for the 50th anniversary, it was all gold.

  • This is The Day of the Doctor in all his forms, justly celebrated, and set up for decades of new adventures.

  • It was fascinating to see how Matt Smith and David Tennant interacted... They sparred terrifically with a fair amount of trademark humour.

  • Moffat, the cleverest of Doctor Who show-runners, approaches it with the same clockwork precision he lavishes on his season arcs, where every tossed-off curve or surprise twist is actually ingeniously woven into the big picture.

Audience Reviews for Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: The Day Of The Doctor

An fitting 50th Anniversary Special for Doctor Who; even better than the Five Doctors. The plot is intricate and interesting, but well pieced-together so it all makes perfect sense. It fills the gap between the old series and the new series nicely. The emotional impact is strong as powerful surprises are revealed.

I've identified myself as a New Whovian for over a year now, but after watching a respectable chunk of the new series and getting invested in multiple strains of fandom (collecting and gifting paraphernalia; sharing and creating trivia, memes, and Dalek puns; attending and actually dressing up for themed parties; arguing over my favorite incarnations and companions [the 9th {Spoilers: 10th} Chris Eccleston and sassy-savvy Martha]), I ought to be a full-blown Whovian by now. Unfortunately, I have to say that I am more a fan of Doctor Who's saturated status in our current pop culture climate than the show itself for its slight campiness, plot-hole-ridden narratives, and rule-bending representations of time travel. That being said, I still enjoyed the 50th Anniversary Extravaganza in 3D in the movie theatre, with its cheeky "Silence Your Cell Phone" PSA, the nods to and cameos by past Doctors, the reappearance of Billie Piper as Bad Wolf (even though I don't much care for the lisping, whimpering Rose), and the geek-chic "Twinsies" chemistry of Matt Smith and David Tennant, tempered by the venerable John Hurt.

One of the greatest and longest running series of all-time gives us one of the greatest Doctor Who episodes ever made. A spectacularly enjoyable and exhilarating thrill-ride. I absolutely loved it. It delivers a visually satisfying and stunning mixture of mystery, action, adventure, humor, heart and surprises. A wickedly funny and tremendously entertaining event that has you loving every minute of it. The brilliant trio of Matt Smith, John Hurt and David Tennant is just absolute gold. They have fantastic chemistry together and deliver strong and thrilling performances. Smith and Tennant are outstanding, its amazing to see these two incredible actors together playing The Doctor and you can tell they are having a marvelous time working together. Hurt is magnificent, he truly has earnerd the right to be called The Doctor, he brings great weariness and regret to the character and his early days before his predecessors and just shines in every scene he is in. Writer-Show runner, Steven Moffat delivers an extraordinary script with plenty of references and ideas and puts in the hands of Director, Nick Harran and creates something truly wonderful and special.
