In this film, Jane Fonda plays a rural mother of five in WWII-era Kentucky. In search of defense-plant work, her husband uproots the family and heads for Detroit, but Jane finds conditions in the slums of Detroit appalling. Still, she creates a niche for herself by becoming a skilled dollmaker.
