(1976) Ugly, Dirty and Bad
(In Italian with English subtitles)

Although, the movie doesn't have a plot, it does however, introduces us to a family living together in a cardboard shack in one of the most poorest locations in Italy. It's located high on a hill near a highway which can be labelled as your average dumping ground. The head of the household is Giacinto Mazzatella (Nino Manfredi) who appears to own this little shack along with his wife and older sons and their kids scrunched sleeping together on whatever small spaces s/he could find. And each one of the members are throwing fits with one another especially the head of the household who is the father who throws the biggest fit of them all who sleeps with a loaded shotgun beside his bed getting all paranoid about his bundle of money which he hides it on different locations wherever he could find. His mother whose like the oldest member of this family does nothing but watch TV whereas each morning everybody else leaves doing what hoodlums do which is thieving and loitering. Much of the movie showcases the father with his one good eye grumbling about his no good kids and neighbors and then clash at them. As we the viewers observe the family squabbles with one another particularly against the father, it is still fascinating to see how each of them cope with another this long for although their lifestyle is routine, it's still enough to keep our interests from sticking to them until the very end.

Imagine Fellini's neorealistic Miracolo a Milano (1951) with its humor twisted into a John Waters / Marco Ferreri celebration of political incorrectness. Almost literally, there is cannibalism within this unconventional family, and Nino Manfredi acknowledges this as the "head" of them all. Scola never attempted something similar in his career as far as I'm concerned (he'd later proceed with a non-serious, self-spoofing failed romantic movie called Passion d'Amore [1981] with an unintentional(?) reference to Nosferatu), yet his remarkable direction propels a unique twist in any genre this rare hybrid possesses.

This is an interesting film, part comedy, part social depicton of a family living in a slum in roma during the 70's! It's quite dry & bleak but somehow it's catchy and entertaining! It's a film from an other era that's for sure, when families where big & life was not turning around social recognition or facebook to say the least! It was a time of toughness & economic harship for italy and maybe for Europe in General. This film has a radical view point & is in complete osmosis with it's subject! It's a gritty & dirty film, filled with incredible chracters & too many truth about what the future holds for these unfortunate kids growing in such a bad environement! Wait for the last shot, when the image freezes, you will understand all the bitterness this film holds under the appearance of a dark comedy!

Frankly, this outcast and good taste disturbing humor made me laugh - it surely has its hilarious moments. After few long uncut camera takes I've put big hopes in the art side of the movie but the closer to end the worse it gets. Some kind of Italian version of "Pink Flamingos" or Dutch flick "Flodder" from the 80's. Nevertheless worth to see.

Oh my goodness. I really didn't see this coming. Scola created an overwhelmingly funny fresco of the Roman slums bursting with life amidst shacks over-the-top filled with children, parents, grandparents, nephews, cousins....Nino Manfredi is Giacinto, the family patriarch constantly aimed at hiding his savings from the rest of his numerous family. At moments, this seems like "Married With Children" taken to the extreme, except for the fact that Ed O'Neill is nowhere near Manfredi when it comes to the embodiment of Moliere's archetype of a cheap, strict, albeit funny father figure. In Scola's film, incest really is a kind of family entertainment, and sex is a no-frills thing, something one wants to get over with, without any dramatic introduction or romantic feelings. The film reduces sex to an urge which needs to be satisfied, but you're too busy laughing your ass of to actually concentrate on any kind of serious criticism. Giacinto's grotesquely mega-breasted lover is a far cry from the idealized vision of Sofia Loren's Ciociara, she's more akin to the Venus of Willendorf. He lets her move in with the family and share the bed with him and his wife(to his wife's strong reluctance). Actually, talking about "Ugly,Dirty And Bad" doesn't do this little masterpiece justice. Just see it.

Manfredi reigns amongst thieves (and mischievous dodgers, hehe) and Scola enchants the audience regardless of political correctness or conventional goofs.Wacko families will never stop eating each other's flesh and not even adultery shall prevent Giacinto from conducting his greedy anarchy.

A terrific film by Ettore, his one of the greatest italian directors among fellini, sergio leone..., and in this film he describes in a beautiful and disgusting manner the situation of the inhabitant of shantytowns in Italy.
A voir!!

The title says it all. Yes, they are. And it's beautiful.

The Italian film director Ettore Scola was fed up with poor people being portraited on film as nice and caring - he meant that people who live at the bottom of society in the poorest and dirtiest circumstances, normally reflect the life they are living, and that is what he wanted to show with this film.
We follow a family of about 20 people, from four generations, all living under the same roof in a dump on the outskirts of Rome. And they are NOT nice people, any of them! The film is both funny, tragic and disturbing, but so unreal in its realistic way that you don't really know whether to laugh or be disgusted. The film has several similarities to Federico Fellini's filmmaking, but is more over the top.
It's a very good and bizarre film and brilliantly acted, especially by the protagonist.

LETTERBOX. / It is a satire of human beings and their vocation for misery. As such, the viewer commits to reject such manifested disdain (though somewhat eased by certain scenes) or to join in laughing at the characters... Sometimes laughs cannot be helped, but this movie rests upon a very unpleasant--though hardly questionable--platform. However, it is redundant.
