william d @acsdoug 07/14/2021 The first half of Dr. Jack is a little too melodramatic. Halfway through, however, Lloyd puts on a hat and a wig and the movie gets wonderfully silly. I'm recommending it based on that second half slapstick. See more 07/07/2016 As enjoyable as it is, it's not as strong as lloyds movies that came immediately before and after it. It still has lots to offer and there are plenty of laughs and clever visual gags to be enjoyed throughout the movie. See more 10/21/2015 Another early entry from Master Comedian Harold Lloyd & this time round he is a country Doctor & always behind the 8 ball. Filled with crowd pleaser gags & lots of fun it's hard to take this film seriously. Basically the story of rich exploited by a doctor in convincing the family the daughter is very ill. Dr. Jack (Lloyd) quickly identifies she is fine & that's when things get complicated. Silly & harmless fun, even in his early works you can see Lloyd is going to be an incredible comedian. See more eric b 03/07/2012 A sweet tale of a young, idealistic doctor (Harold Lloyd) who manages to cure everyone's ails without actually doing anything medical. He's more of the Patch Adams mindset, you see. He'd rather prescribe fresh air and good humor. Jack faces his biggest challenge when he's asked to check on a beautiful invalid (Mildred Davis, later to become Lloyd's wife). A rival doctor (Eric Mayne) has been keeping her in bed for years, just to siphon off her rich family's funds. Poor girl. A climactic sequence involving an escaped lunatic is a bit burlesque compared to the earlier material, but "Dr. Jack" is still a nice little comedy. The plot was a bit episodic for my tastes, but there are some gags in this movie that I will never forget. Surprisingly well done. See more 04/09/2009 A lot of critics say Chaplin had more heart and Keaton better gags, but films like Lloyd's "Dr. Jack" dispute that. Though there is a certain amount of pad that Lloyd eliminated in later features, the story is sophisticated, the gags are very funny (especially the entire "escaped lunatic" run) and the characters are solid. The film has heart. It's not Lloyd's tightest, best film, but still a pleasure to watch. See more Read all reviews
