Movie Info

In this dark Greek drama, a prominent actress prepares to perform in a new production of Medea. Her director is an old flame who wants her to visit an American ex-patriate who lives in a nearby town. It seems that the Yankee woman was imprisoned for killing her three children, a crime which Medea committed in the play. The director believes that meeting the woman will inspire the actress to a more realistic portrayal. As the film progresses, flashbacks create further parallels between Medea and the American woman and by the time the play is staged, the actress has become obsessed with her. Ellen Burstyn's portrayal of the murderous mother is especially powerful.
