Movie Info

The Hallmark Hall of Fame production Dreamkeeper is a four-hour television miniseries. Teenager Shane Chasing Horse (Eddie Spears) is a member of the Dog Soldiers gang on the Pine Ridge Reservation. His mom (Sheila Tousey) asks him to take his grandpa Old Pete Chasing Horse (August Schellenberg) to the All Nations Storytelling Powwow in Santa Fe, NM. Shane owes money to some gangsters, so he agrees in order to get out of town. As they drive across South Dakota in a beat-up old Ford, Grandpa tells stories about magical Lakota legends. The stories are re-enacted with the help of computer-generated images. Dreamkeeper was broadcast on ABC in 2003.

Audience Reviews for Dreamkeeper

One of The Best movies about the traditions and roll of the "Story Tellers" among the Native Americans. Well worth following the telling trail that the story leads you through. I've watched it many times, and will watch it more.

Dreamkeeper is a richly detailed movie. Basically the theatrical presentation of several different Native Americans legends, the main story centers on a troubled young man who agrees to accompany his grandfather on a trip to escape that same trouble he has gotten into at home. As they travel, the traditional grandfather tells stories that his grandson Shane isn't always eager to hear. Eddie Spears and August Schellenberg work well together in this wonderful coming of age story. Native American legends just aren't done as much as they could be in Hollywood as they could be. Too many movies these days are just the same material done over in a new way. The legends included in Dreamkeeper may be traditional, but are in no way old fashioned. This movie is definitely a must-see for anyone, although some of the scenes might scare young children.

I loved this movie. Various tales of different tribes told by storyteller Grandpa who decides to take a trip to a powwow, and requests the aid of his grandson to drive him there. Interesting movie and all on Natives. :)
