Critics Consensus

Fueled by bombastic violence and impressive special effects, rooted in self-satire and deadpan humor, Dredd 3D does a remarkable job of capturing its source material's gritty spirit.

Movie Info

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge - a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of "Slo-Mo" experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. -- (C) Lionsgate

Dredd was really good surprisingly, I didn't expect it to be this good! Here's what I liked/disliked. Positives: 1. Karl Urban as Dredd, wow he was awesome. He has a very cheesy exaggerated expression and all the better for it, his character just oozes cool and he has some funny moments as well as badass moments! Olivia Thirlby was really good, I honestly felt for her character and she was a great sidekick. Lena Headey as Ma-Ma was just disgusting and her performance was so convincing, you just love to hate her and she did a great job portraying that character. 2. Visuals, style and action; I loved the visuals, this movie is shot well and looks good. The slow-mo scenes are surprisingly gourgeous and this movie is just shot so well. This film is pretty self-aware, it has some cheesy acting but it works for this film honestly and I like the post-apocolypse setting that is realistically portrayed, well for the most part. The action is great, its filmed so well, no shaky cam and quickcut crap. Its all steady and easy to follow. Negatives: 1. My only negatives is that this film doesn't really have enough substance, the story is very simple and the acting is very serviceable. I'm not saying having a simple story and acting is a bad thing but this film doesn't really offer much in terms of substance. I also thought some scenes were a little over the top and some of the special effects especially the minigun shootout were bad. Overall: I liked Dredd, it's a really well made action movie. Its kinda like Robocop in a way and it does borrow some elements from other sci-fi films but it uses those elements to convey its own original premise and it in the end it worked great!

When this came out, I was thinking of the crappy Sylvester Stallone version from the 90s, so I missed it in the theaters. And after seeing it on video, I kick myself every day. Awesome sci-fi action in the vein of the original Robocop. Owing a nod to "The Raid; Redemption", this film straps you into the roller coaster and speeds away until you finally slam to a stop and scream "again!" A must see for fans of the sci-fi action film.

For what it intends to do -- minimal as that may be -- it hits the mark. I wouldn't call it a classic, but it is solid, and there are few notable flaws. I'd call it a 3.8 from me.

Taking more from the original comic than the 1995 adaptation, "Dredd" is simple, bloody, gory, gross, action packed, and thrilling. This new Dredd (Urban) is played as a straw man Clint Eastwood, who is vetting a young psychic (Thirlby) for active duty. Their interplay makes for an interesting team, and adds tension to an already thrilling plot. Lena Headey was an sound choice of villain, and she remains threatening throughout, especially when she calls for violence against her own people. Most of the film is set within the confines of a single housing project in a poverty stricken area of a futuristic world. Designer drugs come into play, there's economic and social disparity, and much of the film shows how big this world is without being explicit in details. It's paced rather well, and there's a lot of potential for a sequel. This truly delivers where other action films are happy to stand on the sidelines.
