Movie Info

An Alcoholics Anonymous meeting provides the framework of this slice-of-life drama. The meeting is seen from start to finish as it takes place in the dingy basement of a church. The plot is adapted from screenwriter Gary Lennon's play Blackout. As each member of the group gets up to tell his or her story (and many of them are wrenching) it is plain to see that alcoholism affects many different kinds of people regardless of cultural background or social standing. At one point during the meeting, one of the members storms out and goes on a massive bender.

Audience Reviews for Drunks

Richard Lewis plays a "version" of himself... which means this was part of his rehab. And he's phenomenal anyway. Other actors (Wiest, Posey, Rockwell) are great too, even if it's kind of repetitive.

Starring: Richard Lewis, Liza Harris, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Plummer, Kevin Corrigan, Parker Posey, Dianne Wiest, Faye Dunaway, Lisa Gay Hamilton, and Calista Flockhart. Directed by Peter Cohn. Written by Gary Lennon. Rated R (for pervasive strong language, substance abuse and a sex scene). Running time approximately 1 hour 28 minutes. I can't tell who that even is... Peter Cohn's Drunks is a success due solely to the fact that everyone here delivers a fantastic performance. The dialogue, which reads like improvisation, is delightfully crisp and realistic, and each one of the characters is an individual, but not to the point of ridiculous eccentricity. I really enjoyed the film as far as the performances went. Outside of the acting, the production itself is rather bland and quite depressing. I do offer Richard Lewis congratulations for giving what may be the best performance from him I've seen. These people are alcoholics, which is horribly sad. Not surprisingly, their stories are heartbreaking. ***1/2 (out of ****) B+
