Dumb and Dumber To does have its moments, but not enough of them -- and the Farrelly brothers' brand of humor is nowhere near as refreshingly transgressive as it once seemed. Read critic reviews

The gags run the gamut from the inspired to the amusingly corny -- and are hung on one of the Farrellys' patented convoluted plots.

The Farrellys, who once had a genuinely anarchic edge, demonstrate a fatal lack of timing - missing the film's comic beat by around 20 years.

The occasional uproarious moment is small reward for the long scenes we're forced to endure of Carrey and Daniels gurning and grinning as if they are fresh out of bedlam.

Let's face it, honking, braying dullards no longer feel like a novelty in mainstream entertainment.

Feb 01, 2016After twenty long years, Harry and Lloyd are back AND... most people didn't care. Despite the success of the first film, the Farrelly's waited far too long to bring the pair back. Everyone who grew up watching the first film are adults now, and the demographic they were going for with a PG-13 rating, has no idea who Harry and Lloyd are, hence the disappointing numbers at the box office. In this long awaited sequel, Harry (Jeff Daniels) is in need of a kidney and finds out that his only living relative is a daughter he never knew about. That's all it take to get Harry and Lloyd back on the road for more antics AND... they tried too hard. The original film was legitimately laugh out loud funny, while it's sequel may lead to a snicker or two. The beauty of the original is that it was so simple and so stupid that you couldn't help but laugh. The new one is full of long running pranks, modern slang the pair don't understand, and just obvious jokes. There's absolutely no spontaneity, like when Harry chucks the salt over his shoulder or Lloyd puts laxative in Harry's tea. That's not the only issue here, as the bad guys are kind of the biggest joke in the movie and Lloyd finally crosses the line from cute to creepy. The bottom line, I loved seeing Carrey and Daniels together again and I enjoyed the parallels to the first film, but aside from a few misunderstandings and a line here or there, this film isn't even close to being the film fans waited twenty years to see.Todd S Super Reviewer

Mar 22, 2015This is a sad movie. Not only does it see two men in Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising roles in the 50s and 60s, respectively. It's also the Farrelly Bros. last attempt to hold on to the last vestige of their relevance by making a sequel to what is, arguably, their most successful and enduring comedy. Look, when I was a child, Jim Carrey was among my favorite actors, period. My mom and dad took me to see Ace Ventura 2 in a theater that, as far as I can remember, was largely empty. The movie was so terrible that ever since then, and it's been 20 years since Ace Ventura 2 came out, that Jim Carrey has largely stayed away from sequels due to his feeling that the sequel is usually never good as the original. And I couldn't blame him for that, to be honest, in most of these cases, that is the case. It's just a rehash of what was done the first time around with only slight tweaks. Having said all that, Carrey's decision to commit to a sequel to one of his most remembered roles is mind-boggling. And Jeff Daniels too, for that matter. While Jeff Daniels, outside of his stint in The Newsroom, has played more supporting roles in films in recent years, I still don't think he's that hard up for work that he HAD to do this. Maybe they both thought 'what the hell, this might be fun?' Either that or they were paid very handsomely to make this happen. Either way, they should've said no. I like the first film, in all its stupidity, but it's not a film I was in love with in any way, shape, or form. So the sequel being largely bad, with a few exceptions of some funny lines and moments, doesn't really affect my like of the first film at all, since I didn't love it. But for people who DID love the original, whether they grew up with it or whatnot, this might actually damper their enjoyment of the first film. I doubt that most of these people don't consider When Harry Met Lloyd, the prequel, as "canon". Like sort of how The Hangover 2 made people, myself included, doubt their enjoyment of the first movie. It shouldn't be that way, if you enjoyed it then you enjoyed it and no shitty sequels should, hopefully, change that. But it's just how people react, whether consciously or not. The best part about the film is the credits where they have two screens showing footage of Harry and Lloyd from the first movie in one of the screens and footage from them in the second movie on the other. It's actually really cool and even sweet in some regards. You know things were rough going when that's the best part of the film. I just found film, with the typical Farrelly bros. brand of humor of gross-out gags, slapstick, and stupidity, to be really empty. The first 30 minutes or so of the movie, with the exposition, were actually pretty goddamn terrible. Like they had no time to finish the script before they were supposed to film. It was first-draft type stuff. It's like the film was shot in its figurative knees and it just hobbled out the gate. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression, as the cliche goes. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are fine together, no problem there, it's just that they're saddled with such a lame script. The cast has some talented people, but you wouldn't know it by watching this. Like I said, it's just a sad movie that shows that the Farrelly bros, who were never great to begin with, are a shell of their former selves. I don't think their brand of comedy will ever go out of style. People will still enjoy gross-out gags, fart jokes, and slapstick. But it also feels like they're still behind the times with films like Superbad, This is the End, Knocked Up, Neighbors, among others, picking up the slack and adding a little twist to the old raunchy routine. They've added heart to their films, it just isn't all about how gross you can be, now these films, in spite of all their silliness, are populated with characters and believable narratives, at least in the context of their self-contained universe. And the Farrellys have simply not adjusted the style to the times and it makes this movie feel completely out of place and out of time. A film from another era. I suppose you couldn't change too much, so that people who loved the first movie had something to gravitate to, but take some risks. I don't think this film was ever going to be the most successful comedy in history, I think it was as successful as it was going to be. No more and no less. But it was more just like a novelty thing as opposed to truly wanting to see the film. So why not take that opportunity to try something new. If it doesn't work, then fine, at least you tried. I don't know, maybe I'm over-analyzing the film. I never thought this was going to be good anyway, but I had an open mind. I wanted to like this movie and I did like parts of it, but there's no real structure or story progression. It's just a collection of sketches where Harry and Lloyd act as dumb as humanly possible. That's not really rewarding to me, but I guess it is for some people. Not as much of a disaster as I was expecting, but it's still a pretty damn bad movie. Thankfully, I'll forget about this in a day or two. But I still wouldn't recommend this even IF you are a fan of the first one. It will only ruin your childhood.Jesse O Super Reviewer
