The Emperor's Club is the best pro-vouchers argument I've seen yet.

In the spirit of Canin it ought to be, yet director Michael Hoffman and screenwriter Neil Tolkin can't resist converting rumination into plot, then tailoring the plot to the explication of messages they don't trust us to get -- or argue with.

The final third of the film is a redo of the contest when the boys are middle-aged. Yes, watching the same trivia contest twice is just as exciting as it sounds.

It's a simpering, ineffective ersatz-drama, so simple-minded and unrealistic and so full of fussy stupidity, it exiles you.

There are a few things that will always be assured: death, taxes, and the obligatory "tender teacher tale" genre that bombards the big screen every blue moon.

...the efforts of its star, Kline, to lend some dignity to a dumb story are for naught.

A movie that seems motivated more by a desire to match mortarboards with Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting than by its own story.

Interchangeably Perfect Students run through the hall. God forbid they should be late for class, what with them being the children of privilege and all and do they have any idea how they'd shame the family name if they were a nanosecond out of lockstep? N

Feeling longer than its actual 109 minutes, the movie might have benefited from emphasizing its characters over platitudes.

Thinking about what the film might have been makes it almost impossible to enjoy the film that is.

It's hard to believe that this film by Michael Hoffman ... is so humorless, so bloodless, so mawkish, so talky.

The obvious sincerity of director Michael Hoffman and star Kevin Kline doesn't translate to on-screen energy.

Life, the movie concludes, is not as simple as most movies like it would have you believe, but it doesn't manage to make the characters complex enough to make this an insight rather than an axiom.
