Critic Reviews for Empire State

  • Despite being based on a true story, Empire State is nothing but a bland and predictable tale that completely lacks originality.

  • Montiel's worked through this type of tough guy material before, yet there's still no sign of creative growth. Maybe it's time for the filmmaker to move out of New York City and see what the rest of the country is up to.

Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth) has always wanted to be a cop, but as is the case with most recent graduates, he's on a waiting list, so he takes a job as an armored truck guard. Almost as soon as he starts working there, Chris is scared by the amount of money and the lack of security at the place he's working, and stupidly mentions that fact to his best friend, Eddie (Michael Angarano). Eddie immediately plans and executes a robbery, which both the police and Chris's mobbed up bosses thinks he's involved in. Now his life is endangered on three separate fronts and he's not sure where to turn. Empire State is a tremendous thriller based on a true story, written and directed by Dito Montiel, and if you don't know the name, you should. Montiel made a stunning debut, telling his life story in the film, A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, in 2006 (On of our Must See Movies). Montiel's career has been all up hill from there. He grew up on the streets of Brooklyn, and all his films are based on real life stories from the neighborhood, that were forgotten a long time ago. With Montiel films you're always guaranteed a few things, a well written story, a tremendous cast, lots of action, and lots of eye candy, and Empire State does not disappoint. This film has everything from the insider angle, to the mob, inside the police investigation, and of course Liam Hemsworth at the center of it all. Big brother Chris may get all the recognition in Hollywood, for being the all-mighty Thor, but baby brother Liam, really does get better and better in every film I see him in. Empire State has a little bit of everything, it is well written, and comes at you from so many different angles. This film was so much fun to watch, it's the kind of thing you want to see more than once, and it's streaming so if you're not doing anything right now, go check it out!

The film was ok, but could have been so much better. They had a good idea for a film, but didn't execute it correctly. The film was a bit predictable. I also felt like I have seen this type of film before, but done better. The film needed a style kind of like what Spike Lee did in the Inside Man. I did like that the film does use real news footage from the time. Liam Hemsworth was ok, in a role that I could easily see Channing Tatum do. I thought he was better here than in Paranoia. Michael Angarano was a bit over the top, his character was like that too. I could have seen Shia LaBeouf do that role. I felt that Michael was doing a Joe Pesci impression sometimes during the film. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson steals the film. He is the best thing in the movie.

Before we get started with this review, let's make one thing clear: The Rock may grace the cover of this movie, The Rock may be the best actor in this movie, but this is definitely NOT the Rock's movie. Empire State is a stale attempt at a pretty standard genre: bank robbery. There's little to no character development. It's more of an extended cameo for Rock and Emma Roberts. Liam Hemsworth must have done this to get some experience under his belt as a leading man with his brother racking up the premier pictures with Thor and Rush. Pretty bland. Look elsewhere.

Based on a true story. Very good film! I was pleasantly surprised, at no point was this film hard to watch or boring to me, just an OK thriller like many others that is worth watching even if it's not blowing your mind away. The movie does an excellent job of capturing that 80's New York feel. The actors all play their parts well and speak with appropriate accents. The movie has a really good script and the director gave his best to create scenes and pace that keep your adrenaline and interest in high levels. After failing to get into the police academy, Chris Potamitis (Liam Hemsworth), settles for a security guard job with the EMPIRE STATE Armored Truck Company. Chris makes the mistake of mentioning the company's lax security to his best friend, Eddie (Michael Angarano), and is soon unwittingly drawn into an elaborate scheme to rob the abundant amounts of cash being stored there - resulting in the largest cash heist in U.S. History. As the stakes continue to rise, Chris and Eddie must outwit James Ransone (Dwayne Johnson), the veteran NYPD Detective that is hot on their trail, as well as the local crime bosses that want to know who pulled a job on their turf, or suffer the consequences.
