Whether the Endeavor pilot, which drew an impressive 8.2 million viewers in Britain, will delight the die-hard Inspector Morse fan is questionable.
Endeavour is wonderfully entertaining on its own, but what puts it over the top is its loving respect for John Thaw. In that regard, it is a just tribute to a great and beloved actor.
Wrapping in Morse's passion for opera and crossword puzzles, Endeavour is most interesting for the light it sheds on the character development of young Morse.
You don't have to be familiar with the Inspector Morse series in order to enjoy Endeavour. But the experience will be many times richer if you do recognize this new film as a prequel to the old show.
It is a suitably complicated and pictorially engaging work of period suburban mystery.
Endeavour was a spot-on portrayal of a young Inspector Morse and it would be a crime if the trials of the stoic detective were not turned into a series.
A treat for the faithful.
