Audience Reviews for Ernst Lubitsch in Berlin - Von der Schönhauser Allee nach Hollywood

I haven't watched the documentary yet, but I'll use this space to comment on the unlisted Oyster Princess. It's part of Kino's Lubtisch set. There's a proto-screwball charm and a sense of rhythm to the editing that is largely lacking in silents of the period (1919!). It's impossible to view without looking ahead to his more celebrated work, but his wit is already evident. He's largely (possibly entirely) limited to a static camera, but he manages to come up with some interesting compositions and sight gags. It's just another indication that European cinema was far ahead of most of their Hollywood competition. Lubitsch wisely divides the hour long film into 4 fifteen minute acts. There are a few parts that drag and I didn't find the celebrated foxtrot sequence as revelatory as I expected. In fact, I much preferred the early and late bratty moments with the lead girl. She's very much a part of what Lubitsch, Sturges and others would bring to the forefront a decade or so later.
