Every Which Way But Loose

Critics Consensus

The inexplicable pairing of Clint Eastwood with an orangutan is the least of Every Which Way But Loose's problems -- a slack action-comedy with a haphazardly assembled story.

  • Eastwood has the best double take in the business, there are some interesting glimpses of blue-collar LA, and the downbeat ending displays a genuine moral intelligence.

  • The plot remains as flat as the treacly country-western score.

  • For Eastwood fans, the essential elements are there. Lots of people get beat up, Eastwood walks tall and looks nasty, cars are crashed. James Fargo directs limply.

  • The whole thing seems like an indulgent, expensive home movie created by and for Eastwood's customary stock company of actors.

  • Far from showing off Mr. Eastwood to flattering advantage, this kind of format virtually eclipses his talents. Every Which Way but Loose... is the slackest and most harebrained of Mr. Eastwood's recent movies.

Eastwood as a good ol' boy, bare-knuckle fighter who falls for a aspiring honky tonk singer (Sondra Locke). While seemingly amiable on the surface the work is fraught with interior tension, brooding hate and mistrust, that is Middle America. Interesting. Eastwood's only friend is an orangutan.

A comic classic. Clint Eastwood is terrific in his first comedy feature with a orangutan who proves to be more than a worthy sidekick. A hilarious and enormously entertaining adventure that`s just a pure blast. A tremendously fun and exciting action-packed comedy. You cant help but love this movie for its humor and heart. It`s nothing but a good time. A true gem that you don't want to miss.

Every Which Way is suprisingly good considering Eastwood wasn't made for this sort of movie. It boasts memorable lines and characters and although it has it's flaws ncluding its god-awful pacing. Every Which Way But Loose is uninspired but fun entertainment.

Just a really great movie. It's Clint Eastwood onscreen kicking ass for two hours. He uses his god given guns to defeat the bad guys and woo the ladies. This is a really fun experience that manages to be funny without being cheesy. I love Clyde and his talents (flipping people off, drinking beer and having sex at the zoo), he seemed like a true best friend to Clint Eastwood.
