Eastwood as a good ol' boy, bare-knuckle fighter who falls for a aspiring honky tonk singer (Sondra Locke). While seemingly amiable on the surface the work is fraught with interior tension, brooding hate and mistrust, that is Middle America. Interesting. Eastwood's only friend is an orangutan.
Even in comedy Clint Eastwood still pulls through
The best comedy movie ever made!
My fav movie of all time!
Screenplay has Clint Eastwood as a beer-guzzling, country music-loving truck driver who picks up spare change as a barroom brawler. When Sondra Locke, an elusive singer Eastwood meets at The Palomino Club, takes off for Colorado, Eastwood packs his pickup truck in pursuit. Behind him are a motorcycle gang and an LA cop. Both have been victims of Eastwoodâ(TM)s fists. They want revenge. Traveling with Eastwood is Geoffrey Lewis and Beverly Dâ(TM)Angelo, whom the two meet on the road. Thereâ(TM)s also an orangutan. His name is Clyde. Eastwood won him a few years back in a fight. He goes everywhere with Eastwood. He drinks beer, finds a one-night stand at a zoo in New Mexico and cheers on his friend. Huge hit back in the day though panned critically.
What did I just watch? Seriously, if this is what passed for comedy in the 70s, I'm glad I'm a child the 80s. The humor of Every Which Way But Loose seems to be built around the fact that there's an orangutan on the screen and everything else came second. This was the fourth highest-grossing film of 1978? How is that possible?
This is a classic film that celebrates kindness, generosity, trust, sensitivity to others' feelings, sticking up for loved ones and not letting anyone take advantage of you. It's unusual in that the girl the hero falls in love with turns out to be a selfish user. I suppose the message is it's better to be dumb and decent than smart and selfish.
A pretty harmless and fun redneck comedy. It never takes itself too seriously and for Eastwood fans it's a rare comedy role.
Say what you want to about this movie, but it has a theme song, and the way it kicks back in after the bar fight at the start is something special.
A comedy film with clint eastwood taking the lead role? A very out of character film for him to play. Every which way but loose sees clint eastwood a trucker by day and a bare knuckle fighter travel cross country to find this girl he has fallen for. Some very hilarious scenes, mainly from the biker gang and also clyde the orangutan. A classic comedy caper that is a damn sight entertaining.
