Extinction (2018)

TOMATOMETER

——

Critic Consensus: Extinction has a few intriguing ideas, but they -- and some game performances from its talented stars -- are lost in the movie's muddled plot and frustrating pacing.

A B-movie with a blockbuster attitude, and not in a fun way.

It's entertaining enough, with larger than life set pieces, with dystopian vibes throughout.

It's probably for the best that this movie went to Netflix and not to the theaters. It lacked spark to fill a huge room.

Extinction is sure to thrill, shock, surprise and impress -- if you're a science-fiction fan.

Strong acting, wonderful direction, and a mostly alluring script overcome a somewhat commonplace story with familiar themes.

The big twist is a good one, there are some decent action sequences and Lizzy Caplan is always good to watch, but there isn't enough here to keep things from dragging.

Audience Reviews for Extinction

½

This film is severely disappointing and another poor choice by Netflix films. The filmmaker lacked any true storytelling capabilities, the beats are poorly staged and suddenly, the twist is dumped on the ground. If the filmmakers were planning on further adventures, it might have payed to invest a little more focus on the characters, this plays out like any other tired mid ranged sci fi film. There is a reason no one watches these budgeted films at the cinema anymore, poor storytelling and uneventful filmmaking. Why would I recommend this to anyone? Michael Pena is wasted in the family guy role, a shame considering the depth he has, it is a miscast that shatters this film. I enjoy a good twist on a tired narrative and this is where I'll throw a couple of points to writer, there is some fresh ideas here, but the film is a narrative nightmare, why is it so slow? Extinction is another thud in the Netflix canon that includes Bright and Spectre, both promised interesting concepts, just poor execution. Films like this hurt mid budgeted films and its a shame, I would like more concept adult focused films. 20/11/2018.

A maintenance man is haunted by dreams of an alien invasion - which nobody, especially his wife, believes. Boy, is there some agonizing reappraisal when ... guess what happens?! It's kind of fun, slow at the top, picking up steam as it goes. Summer movie.
