Movie Info

Described by more than one source as a Lebanese equivalent of After Hours, director Michael Kammoun's comedy-of-errors Falafel indeed recalls Scorsese's 1985 feature as it weaves the tale of Middle Eastern Toufic, a young man on his way to a party to meet a girl, Yasmin (Rached) - until a most unexpected accident in a parking lot. Toufic is struck by an obnoxious hit-and-run driver in a BMW, which makes him boil over with rage and sends him out searching for his nemesis and planning an ugly revenge. While - in a distant location - Toufic friends contemplate his whereabouts and take off in hot pursuit of him, Toufic embarks on a wild journey through noctural Beirut, where he encounters every sort of crisis and calamity imaginable.

An easy intro to new Lebanese cinema... chronicling the country's post-civil war emptiness with a light touch as it zaps between playful clowning and edge-of-violence darkness.

What could have been a diverting but ultimately throwaway movie experience becomes something you just can't shake.

It's funny and energetic, dispensing insights without preaching them.
