Mostly, the movie just putters along on two jokes: The Rock is very, very big, and Jason Statham compared to him (and not anybody else) is small.

Whether grimly injecting herself with the virus, bantering with Hobbs or hanging onto a truck like a thrilled kid on a roundabout, Hattie is dynamite. I took a 10-year-old boy to the screening and she was his favourite character.

Usually, it's pleasingly aware of its own silliness. But there are blind spots.
August 3, 2019
It's a thoroughly fun action comedy that delivers exactly what it promises - and if the screening I attended is any indication, kids will love it.

The cardboard standees of these guys in movie theaters across the world will have just as much depth.

Don't let the trailer fool you. It's pants (insert crotch joke here).

While director David Leitch, a former stuntman who helmed "John Wick" and "Atomic Blonde," cooks up some truly breathtaking action sequences and stunts, some moments lose their crisp clarity.
August 2, 2019
There's a problem with the kinds of bloated action sequences that form the skeleton, muscle, and flesh of something like Hobbs & Shaw - a lack of excitement.
August 2, 2019
Another barely adequate sequel, zooming into theaters on the sheer force of name recognition, and vanishing from memory just as quickly.
August 1, 2019
The film is ridiculous and proud of it.
August 1, 2019
The filmmakers so want to maintain the joshing between Johnson and Statham that the movie's ostensible action label and the lust Shaw fears Hobbs has for his sister feel like pretexts for the romantic comedy "Hobbs & Shaw" virtually is.
August 1, 2019
The action is impressive and the stars are personally as well as gladiatorially appealing, but the filmmakers seem to have shot the treatment instead of the script, or never bothered with a script.
August 1, 2019
After all the chaos and confusion, all you're left with is a headache.
August 1, 2019
A spinoff of the popular action franchise featuring two of that series's recurring characters... the film is far from prestige fare, yet more often than not, it hits that summer sweet spot between the silly and the satisfying.
August 1, 2019
All the films in this franchise are family affairs, but you may find yourself wanting to spend more time on this branch of the tree.
August 1, 2019
The film's real star is Kirby. Her dynamic Hattie spends less time jabbering and more time sleuthing than her mouthy male accomplices, and she's also more of a fighter to their bashers.
August 1, 2019
For better or worse, these are digitally souped-up blockbusters that haven't entirely lost touch with their humanity, even if "Hobbs & Shaw," diverting as much of it is, could have used less snark and more soul.
August 1, 2019
The real problem is not simply the paucity of squealing rubber on road; it's the filler that pads the more than two-hour film while we wait impatiently for fixes of fuel-injected mayhem to arrive every half hour.
August 1, 2019
Perfect summer cinema. If that's your bag.

All of this silliness is actually great fun, particularly the bantering chemistry between Johnson and Statham, who spend much of the movie squabbling and calling each other names.
