If director Gus Van Sant had always been a hack it wouldn't matter so much, but personally I find this form of licking the audience's cheeks like an obsequious puppy deeply offensive.

The leaden screenplay can be fingered for many of the film's faults. But what happened to the off-kilter film-maker last seen at work in To Die For?
March 19, 2002
An anti-intellectual film about the intellectual life.

January 12, 2001
A rare find.
January 11, 2001
A rewarding exploration of the knotty and often contentious relationship between teacher and protege. Its chief pleasure is the master class in the art of acting delivered by Sean Connery.
January 11, 2001
This is pure formula -- and practically identical to the story arc of Good Will Hunting -- but Van Sant keeps things just off-kilter enough to make it compelling anyway.
January 11, 2001
A conventional stew of overblown, bogus emotion and rigged catharsis.
January 11, 2001
When the movie conveys the light in a student's eyes, and those of his teacher, at the moment when knowledge has been shared, it's a story that can never be told often enough.

December 26, 2000
A transparent attempt by director Gus Van Sant to repeat the Oscar success of his earlier Good Will Hunting.
December 26, 2000
A juicy and gratifying teacher movie.
December 25, 2000
Sure, maybe Gus has gone Hollywood, but at least he's gone there sideways -- fully aware that a soul is a terrible thing to waste.

December 24, 2000
An enjoyable film, made more so by the performances ... and by dozens of thoughtful touches like Bill Frisell's delicate score.
December 24, 2000
It might've worked better if the film had tried harder to turn these characters into living, breathing people, instead of the bickering odd couple that's become such a stereotype.
December 24, 2000
Warm and likable -- and, during the holidays, warm and likable is often what moviegoers want.
December 22, 2000
Van Sant takes the cliches and gives them a half spin that makes them seem fresh and almost accidental. He's like an inspired jazz musician improvising on an old, too-familiar tune and making it his own.
December 22, 2000
The story is schematic and the hero/villain matchup a little too obvious, but never underestimate the charisma of Connery.

Movies about writers are notoriously hard to do, since writing by its nature is not cinematic. Finding Forrester evades that problem by giving us a man who wrote one good novel a long time ago, and now writes no more.

Finding Forrester manages to take the cerebral act of literary creation and make it exciting, sexy even.

December 22, 2000
A well-acted, if overly familiar, tale of an unlikely friendship.

December 21, 2000
[Van Sant's] visual lyricism and uncondescending attitude toward almost everyone on screen ensure that the film won't succumb to formula.
December 20, 2000
The movie eventually turns ridiculous, as you thought it might.
December 20, 2000
A lot more intriguing than it might have been.
December 19, 2000
Connery gives an energetic (if not especially subtle) and mostly convincing performance, and enjoys remarkable chemistry with terrific first-time actor Rob Brown.
December 19, 2000
At times you can feel Van Sant trying to loosen the movie's windpipe-folding collar, but he doesn't get far, except with Busta Rhymes, as Jamal's gone-nowhere big brother, whose moments are so full of bounce and warmth they feel like invasions from the sc

Finding Forrester is 100 percent bogus, from its high-concept characters whose resemblance to real human beings is distant at best, to the 'lessons' it imparts on everything from courtship to writing.

Like its protagonist, Finding Forrester got game.

December 19, 2000
There is a smooth, practiced charm to all of this, but, even with Connery fulminating for all he's worth, it wears thin.

When either or both [Connery and Brown] are on screen, you can almost forget that these entertaining performances serve such a pat, predictable story.
December 18, 2000
The movie may be too middlebrow and conventional for Gus Van Sant's or Sean Connery's fans, but it's well acted.

Its unhurried exploration of the interaction between the two leads is worth spending a couple hours in a movie theater.
