That the blood and thunder is being carried out by big-eyed children is a little creepy, but then, the Great Patriotic War was no day at the amusement park.

Audience Reviews for First Squad: The Moment of Truth (Fâsuto sukuwaddo)

Yoshiharu Ashino's First Squad is an animated action adventure that combines Russian and Japanese forces.

The concept of the story is thought out and interesting, however the execution is a bit faulty. The film goes about explaining and showing just enough to get by, as scenes come and go like that. Sure, this keeps the film from dragging and becoming a bore, but as a matter of fact, there is barely enough time to get bored with a run time that is just under 75 minutes.

On another interesting note, this movie employs some live action segments in the form of interviews. This gives the story a sense of realism; however this isn't needed. In return, these interviews disrupt the flow of the film.

Visually, the animations and characters look great. Leave it to the Japanese to get this right.

The Russian voice actors aren't too bad themselves. Elena Chebaturkina as Nadya is enjoyable.

Despite some of the obvious flaws, First Squad is still an excellent watch. It is just so close to being superb.
