The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents would have anything to do with it.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Presenting a knotty moral dilemma and refusing to provide easy answers, Cristian Mungiu's superbly well-acted Fjord has a chilly surface that belies a heated humanity beneath the frost.

Certainly, Mungui is such a skilled director that he could easily tell you who to root for and exactly when you should feel good about standing up and cheering. But he would rather leave you twisting a bit in the wind. Go to Full Review

Few films provide as much to think about, to argue about, to be impassioned about. Fjord is breathtaking cinema in more ways than one, both urgent filmmaking and a profound comment on our times. Go to Full Review

Its actors, including Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, as well as two young newcomers, make you believe in one family’s sudden nightmare. Go to Full Review

Amazing performances from Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. This movie still has me thinking, months later. See more T F @Sarah484 1 day ago Most definitely this is an Oscar contender. There should be more films like this, so that you leave the cinema filled, thinking, wondering, feeling. It is an uncomfortable type of thriller/drama. A slow burn. The acting is tremendous! Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve are unstoppable and seamless. Lisa Carlehed is also a new face for me, and she was excellent. This director, Christian Mungiu, is wonderful -- we are lucky to have his dedication to film and to stories that move us. See more Read all reviews
