Flag of Iron (Tie qi men) (The Spearman of Death) Reviews

Possibly the most polarizing and complicated kung-fu film that I've ever seen, and I mean that in a REALLY GOOD WAY. The story structure alone is built like a crowded/loaded ship that's 15 square feet long. There is a lot going on in this film. Albeit, this is still one daring film that speaks on the nature of evil and POWER. An outcast amongst many other films that came before and after it. A must-see.

A tale of brotherhood, loyalty, and betrayal is in this uneven but entertaining picture by 3 of the 5 Venoms and Chang Cheh. When two rival clans go at it, a villainous brother of the Iron Flag gang takes it upon himself to become clan leader, and lets his righteous brother go into exile. The most entertaining parts of the movie was the top ten assassins, which were fun gimmick villains that provided lots of flair and spontaneity. Then the film slows down a lot, as it runs out of story. But it keeps going, as this Shaw Brothers film is nearly two hours long and almost kills itself with bad pacing. A rapid fire spear duel saves the finale, for a better than average martial arts film.

Director Cheh Chang and the Venom Mob deliver another reliable marital arts action flick. The Iron Flag clan's leader is killed by the Spearmen while also fighting the villainous Eagle Clan. The story does' follow the usual revenge-for-killing-my-master plot line. Instead, brothers of the killed Iron Flag leader begin warring one another, when the youngest brother hires the "Ten Killers" to kill his older brother. The older brother then teams up with the Spearmen to right their wrong of having been tricked into killing a good man. The Venoms deliver excellent fight sequences and a better than average story, even though it still relies on their Five Deadly Venoms/Masked Avengers/Ten Killers story a bit.

Flag-fu! Not the best from Cheh and the venoms, but still worth a check. As the usual with Mr Cheh, this is another story about brotherhood, loyalty, bros before hos and manliness.

Chen Chang's martial arts film is entertaining, but definately not his best film by any means. When the master of the iron flag clan is killed, the rest of the gang wipes out the rival and one of the brothers' decides to take the blame and lay low for awhile. Shaw Brothers film that does have a lot of action and some cool characters, but overall nothing mindblowing here.

Wow, what I watched was about 23 minutes longer than what this lists. It did feel pretty long at times, but takes a bit of a different focus. It's easy to have a hot-headed hero charge in for revenge, but there was a lot of talk on all sides about appearances -- sure the one who becomes Chief Cao was up to no good, but he appeared virtuous to many because he was smart. The highlight was the flag spear combat. I had seen a small taste in Life Gamble, but the last half hour contains a lot and is a really interesting stage-type of combat. Really great action throughout with an even better climax.

The Spearman is far more intricate film than one may anticipate from this genre. The subplots, backstabbing, and character development were all well presented by Chang. Masked Avengers had a similar plot and storyline. Both pictures had the same main character as a hero, Lizard, and the same villains with similar backstabbing/double-crossing subplots. The choreography in this film was outstanding. The gory aspects were blended in perfectly with the martial arts choreography. The Spearman marks another triumphant Venoms picture.
