Critic Reviews for Flames
Flames, though energetically crafted, erotic, and at times heartfelt, is an exasperatingly esoteric meditation on love.
Taking a step back: the last half hour saves the film, framing the relationship and the story with narrative distance and objectivity. If you were stuck watching only the first hour it would be infuriatingly pointless.
A document of its times, Flames works as a brilliant time capsule of the Obama era: we walk in on staged protests of late capitalism as often as lovemaking.
We've all been there, which is part of what makes this seemingly insular New York artist story so universal, and so affecting.
If their relationship is indeed a performance and this film the documentation, why not at least make the constructed parts interesting for the viewing party?
