Flatliners is moderately entertaining hocum at times, when it doesn't reach too far. Roberts is the best of the adequate bunch -- only her fans should make this a must-see.

The death trips are part travelogue, part bad dream, and they quickly start to pall with the same scene basically being repeated five times.

A horrible, dumb movie that wastes the time of the good actors involved. This should have been an early indication that Joel Schumacher needed to be stopped.

While the ersatz experimentalism of the "death" sequences has its moments, the meat-locker expressionism of the rest of the movie -- all red filters and demonic jets of steam -- fails to provide any sort of realistic anchor.

Spooky but silly, effective in patches but a bust overall.

It's a movie about daring that dares nothing.

The movie's problem, like many others recently, is that it isn't any deeper, dramatically or psychologically, than its own trailer. It is the trailer: the long version.

Except for the performances by Roberts and Bacon, which occasionally redeem it, Flatliners is exasperating, a compelling concept unfulfilled.

Creepy, almost as creepy as Keifer Sutherland's five'o'clock shadow

Typically flat Schumacher effort--a lot of purple smoke, though

Flatliners is a New Age Nightmare on Elm Street, with anti-drug propaganda and heavy-handed messages about atonement and reconciliation.

We're supposed to think, ''Gee, will they make it back?!'' By the third or fourth close call, we're not exactly sweating.

All I remember is that, just before I came to, there was a sudden burst of brightness. At last the movie was over, and someone had turned on the lights in the theater.

Young medical students intentionally kill and resuscitate each other, thereby gaining knowledge of the afterlife, which turns out to look a lot like... MTV.
