Arthur Phelps (Conrad Nagel) is the World War I veteran who settles in a Texas border town in this compelling drama. He suffers from health problems due to a poison-gas attack and arrives in frail condition. Poll (Dorothy Dalton) is the cabaret dancer in the Mexican cantina owned by the cruel John Rodriguez (Theodore Kosloff). Arthur incurs the wrath of the knife-throwing proprietor when he saves Poll from his lecherous advances. Poll takes a job in a cigar store as the town prospers from an oil boom. Rosa (Mildred Harris) is the ballet dancer who Arthur longs to see, much to the dismay of the jealous Poll. While watching a theater performance, Arthur is blinded by cigar smoke. Poll assumes the identity of her rival and gets Arthur to marry her. A traveling surgeon later restores his sight, and Arthur leaves Poll over the deception. He travels to Siam where Rosa is performing. After battling a prince for her affections, Arthur leaves the self-centered dancer and returns to the wife he left behind.
