For Greater Glory, otherwise known as Cristiada, isn't a film that's comfortable to look at and isn't quite as entertaining as it should be. However, the film benefits from its great cast, a powerfully moving historical story and even a couple of exciting action sequences at the bargain.

For Greater Glory is an epic film about the true story of the Cristero War. Despite it critical consensus, this film tells the unknown story of the Mexican peoples' quest to defend freedom & liberty amongst governmental oppression & tyranny.

Outstays its welcome. Becomes Christian propagandist especially in end credits. Interesting and important historical struggle that could have been told with more emphasis on contemporary events - particularly US involvement in foreign events to further its own interests.
Some fine acting but never get really emotionally involved with characters.
Best to read about this in Wikipedia.

As this site has dumped my writing 3 times before I was finished writing, I assume the principals are not interested in a "non-expert" posting. Well tough. Here it comes. This movie is great. The 77percent approval rating of the audience should be a clue that the 18 percent approval rating of the "critics" is a cynical opinion of those who "better than us". As a believing Catholic, this movie is spot on. Historically correct and NOT AT ALL cliche.

Interesting story that brings to life a little known period of time in the history of Mexico. Character development could have been a little deeper. Overall, the movie was a couple hours well spent.

You can see and hope for a quality production with the talented cast and vibrant visuals but it falls flat. The script is slow and thin. The principal characters have no connection and no chance to develop.

loved this movie which tackles a little known revolt of Catholic peasants in mexico against a virulently anti-religious government.

Really, REALLY corny, although I admit I felt really emotional at the end.

Could have been worse, but at the same time, should have been a lot better. This film has a promising plot, but also has poor editing, weak characters, and is not nearly as emotionally moving as the real events. As far as the pro-Catholic element goes, I don't mind films being pro-anything as long as it doesn't take it too far. This one took it too far.

Decent movie about faith, and dedication. Good acting from Garcia, and the rest of the cast, in the first half of the movie. However, as time went on things became a bit overly dramatic. The stereotyping of good rebels, and bad government, was overdone. This movie could have been really good, but it just somehow missed the mark.

While its historical accuracy is somewhat debatable, this film is reasonably entertaining with enough action and melodrama to keep film buffs satisfied. And it's nice to see Andy Garcia in a legitimate leading role instead of a glorified cameo or supporting part.

Flaws? Perhaps, but trying to fit such a story into a 2.5 hour movie is a tall order. Callas was not a person of depth - he was little more than a atheistic thug who could not tolerate others possessing something he did not understand - faith.

In this day and age, a movie like this is germaine. The folks at Hobby Lobby can tell you how fragile religious freedom is - even in a so-called democracy.

Ambitious and sprawling, Wright's epic about the Cristero War is ultimately undone by a jumbled narrative that shifts focus often. This isn't helped by lack of background information for newcomers and thus, it's easy to get lost as to why the conflict was begun. They even throw in sometimes chaotically filmed action sequences with 'shaky cam' as an 'icing on the proverbial cake'. However, its production values, especially for an independent foreign film, Garcia's solid & imposing turn as the conflicted head general, and sweeping score by veteran master James Horner are certainly admirable.
