Forsaken Reviews

March 18, 2016
In a standard cowering-town-needs-a-gunfighter drama, typical themes (redemption, forgiveness) are laid out with little imagination.

Father and son team up for a Western in the classic style.

Forsaken greatly benefits from the poignant teaming of its father-and-son stars -- as well as Michael Wincott as an especially elegant and eloquent gunfighter who has great respect for John.

It has a solid story to tell, and tells it with no winks and few, if any, frills. It's involving and ultimately exciting.

Solid and dependable, "Forsaken" shouldn't be forgotten. But I wish so much of it didn't feel half-remembered.

Fans of the genre - and the cast - may find it a pleasant enough diversion, but given the recent wave of strong frontier dramas, this film feels especially minor.

Forsaken plays like someone's hazy, half-remembered idea of a Western, from back when men were men, women were dead and "facing the consequences of violence" just meant leaving town on horseback for a while.

The story is terribly unsurprising and that drains the interest out of the film like a bullet hole through a horse trough.

Cassar, who's worked almost entirely in television (most notably on 24), lacks the formal brio to compensate for the script's mundane dialogue and lapses in logic, shooting mostly in undistinguished small-screen close-ups.

Forsaken is a conventional...Western that, with the exception of a particular four-letter word, could have just easily been made in 1956 as 2016. But what saves it from being an extraneous exercise in genre worship are the persuasive performances.

Only Wincott seems to fit in, exuding a poised, laconic cold-bloodedness that stands in stark contrast to the film's inert phoniness.

Forsaken - absolutely inessential, but fun none the less - is the Hollywood cowboy experience unadulterated.

Refreshingly and unabashedly sincere in its embrace of Western conventions and archetypes.
