It's perhaps the only interesting oddity about Free Fire, this unresolved struggle between deathly serious gritty visuals and winking juvenilia. Everything else is competent, diverting enough, but pretty forgettable.

Free Fire has a great cast of bad shots in a movie that hits the mark.

Like a good cheeseburger, its nutritional value is questionable, but it's satisfying enough that it's difficult to care.
July 20, 2019
In its best moments, Free Fire makes Tarantino appear restrained in comparison.
July 16, 2019
Ben Wheatley's latest film has a sharp premise, but doesn't take it any further than its logical, exhausting conclusion.

Just a whole lot of fun, with engaging storytelling, but the metaphorical backbone is still there.
November 19, 2018
It's tightly choreographed with some knowing, throwaway dialogue and it must have demanded some very physical performances from its quirky characters.

A golden hour and a half, if a slightly tarnished one. The many wisecracks fire as fast as the bullets in this enjoyable and stylish gangland romp, though it's curiously unengaging and I never cared who would win.

Free Fire is Wheatley's most accessible film that entertains with its wonderful cast, the witty, quotable script and confident direction. It may not hit a bullseye with perfect accuracy, but unlike the characters, it's certainly ain't a bad shot.

Ben Wheatley's Free Fire is an energetic piece of high-octane cinematic acid jazz. It's a tightly scripted, smartly executed, perfectly cast actioner that's as witty as it is violent.
October 31, 2018
Free Fire is a down and dirty piece of action filmmaking with a darkly comic streak that runs through its violent exterior.
October 16, 2018
The problem with Free Fire is that it just doesn't have much more going on in outside of what you see in the trailer.
October 10, 2018
Free Fire takes a seemingly paper-thin plot and elevates it to a riveting action opus. It's about time to start comparing newer filmmakers to [Ben Wheatley].
October 5, 2018
Free Fire is one more corker in a line of corkers ... taking something seemingly conventional and making a rip-roaring farce out of its carcass.
August 28, 2018
For audiences willing to park their brains at the door and embrace the madness, Free Fire should hit the sweet spot.
August 24, 2018
The film is mostly well-paced and manages to stay hilarious despite the continuous gunfire that sprays across the latter hour.
July 4, 2018
Wheatley allows his notorious black humour to resurface, and with 90 minutes of mindless shootouts, he reaches his goal.

[Free Fire] is a welcome return to the kind of smash and grab pictures Wheatley does best. Over the course of just 91 minutes he gets in, unleashes merry hell in ever more inventive ways, and gets out again. Job (near as dammit) done.

Wheatley has always had a nose for unsavory sorts. And with his embarrassment of riches in "Free Fire," we all get to cash in.

The movie was enjoyable and the characters were great...bullets and snarky remarks fly at people, and I chuckled most of the time.
