When school bully and champion swimmer Robert is poisoned after eating a chocolate éclair left in the pool change rooms, nearly everyone is a suspect. Fifteen year old Rico witnesses the death, a loner who is the complete antithesis of the popular Robert, and also secretly in love with his girlfriend, the sexy Regine. Rico hated Robert so does not care that he has died until he learns that in fact he was the intended victim and suddenly becomes the centre of attention. Although his fellow students are interviewed there is no clue as to who would want to kill him. Still strongly attached to his father, who died 10 years ago under mysterious circumstances Rico starts to view his German teacher, Wegner, as a substitute father. The two see themselves as soul mates. Wegner, like Rico, feels bullied by pupils as well as colleagues. Rico begins to turn his back on reality and weave his model train through the exact replica of his home town that he built. He is excited when Wegner suggests building life size models of the students - in particular the object of Rico's desire, Regine. A relationship of trust develops between the two until Rico becomes aware that all is not what it appears with Wegner and he may hold the answer too many of the mysteries surrounding Rico.
