In "French Film," struggling with the preparation for an interview with noted film director Thierry Grimandi(Eric Cantona) is the least of Jed's(Hugh Bonneville) problems as his ten-year relationship with Cheryl(Victoria Hamilton) has just taken a turn for the worse recently when she turned down his marriage proposal. So, they are now in couples counseling. At least, their friends Marcus(Douglas Henshall) and Sophie(Anne-Marie Duff) are doing much better, even with the threat of a bit of Marcus' past returning back into his life.

"French Film" is an amiable enough movie with a likable cast(it's nice to see Douglas Henshall smile for a change) that barely acknowledges an incident that could be thought of as emotional rape which dwarfs any discussion of journalistic ethics. Otherwise, the movie resembles a Woody Allen film (or Woody Allen doing European films) more than the French films it seems to be commenting on. A large part of that involves separating the fiction from the reality in a relationship as the movie makes a great case for it not being important how two people meet("Scandal" has the exception to this rule) but rather how much they love each other.(The movie implies that there is something seriously wrong in Jed's waiting 10 years to propose whereas it could have just been a case of not wanting to wreck a good thing.) For example, most of the significant people I have known in my life I have met in incredibly insignificant ways.

Very entertaining movie. There is no single formula to love, it is all how you view it and laugh about it.

It's half a comedy love story and half a film with thoughtful clever plot. Well done to the director for not making this a typical chick flick. I'd compare this to a British Woody Allen movie. Fair play also to Cantona who did a very good job in this even though it is a backward stab at the French, insinuating that the reputation that they have as romantics is flawed and that British relationships are less contrived.

A romance with more reality and less stickiness

Fluffy, but doesn't suck.

The usual set of love-triangles that eventually sort themselves out. The story and plot are conventional.

A romantic comedy starring Eric Cantona... There is no way on Earth this should work!! However, it's a pleasing well acted, very well written little comedy which has a very clever/vicious little twist.

A good one. Love is - what? Romcom with a twist. Cantona is convincing, and the plot isn't completely straightforward. For thirtysomethings who are still wondering what love might feel like. Not quite how life really is - but what's a romcom without the fairytale element? One to enjoy, if not to ponder too deeply.

Nice Drama.

To some extent a bit of a humdrum sort of romance, but it is lifted above the average by some really fine acting by all the leads and a few nice twists. Still, it is a bit predictable with a few of your expected romantic cliches. But there are certainly worse around.

First 15 minutes of a relationship should tell you how it will end.

Hugh Bonneville was awesome. I should have known.

Very unpretentious. Bonneville's Jed is so lovable, you really get invested in him, and everyone is so self conscious, the whole film is hilarious.

This was an excellent movie! Such a funny take on love, everyone feels normal and it shows that people can just view it so differently. Really cool!
