Critics Consensus

Failing even as mindless splatter entertainment, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning crudely hacks its way through a repetitive parade of uninspired kills with little style or tension.

A silly, bad horror film. Go to Full Review

What's so disappointing is that most of the killings are just basic cleaver and machete work -- one stroke and it's all over. Go to Full Review

Yash B @yashbansal 3 days ago "Friday the 13th: A New Beginning" is a sequel that came out just a year after the supposed "Final Chapter." That didn't give me much hope when I started it, as most of these films have been bad. This one is easily the worst one yet, as it is just bland and the story doesn't make much sense. I felt some of the kills were okay for a slasher movie standards, but there are so many movies in the genre that are more fun. Overall, this movie feels too campy and boring to really get into, and I feel it is getting harder to get further into this franchise. See more Jameson N @RT58216177 4 days ago Couldn’t even finish it genuinely horrible. See more Teddy B @RT90521672 Oct 6, 2026 There are two things in this movie that are unintentionally great, or good (for a 'Friday the 13th' film, at least), while every other element surrounding it blows chunks. The first is a truly bizarre, out-of-place, and gutbustingly hilarious scene involving a chocolate-inhaling 'AW-phan and aw-ll' and a psycho woodcutter. The second is the whole 'Jason-not-Jason' mystery element, which is fairly amusing in a shut-your-brain-off type of way. That first scene just eclipses the whole of my memory, and earns at least 2 stars right off the bat from how shocking and petty it was; it has to be seen to be believed... See more goatacolypse T @RT66881625 Sep 9, 2026 The one and only reason this is getting 5 stars from me is I had no idea what "making whoopie" was often heard on the Honeymooners show with Chuck Woolery until seeing young Corey doing it while being a peeping Tom. Kudos for really breaking the acting leg on that one even though it's a slasher. If youre a 70s kid then you understand that adults were insane and you thought you were too just not the insane part. Aside from Jason and his drowning theres no real repeat characters meaning no surviors is what separates him from little Mikey Meyers. That would probably drop the knife and play with a Stretch Armstrong if his sister could get the true meaning of Christmas early. All and all it gives the nudity expected and gives you another reason other than sexually transmitted diseases to just make whoopie instead. Life preserver your kid lady clearly said in defense of the councilors. Watch them all in a binge I did last Friday the 13th See more Jasmine W @jasniquejewels Aug 31, 2026 this one wasn't as bad I did like it actually found it hilarious.
