Honestly, this film was a surprise. Not only is it far better than its marketing campaign lets on, but it's genuinely entertaining.

Those who miss the days of Gibson's hardened movie characters will be in for a treat with Get the Gringo, a genuinely gritty, hard-boiled action-noir tale.

Gibson, for all his offscreen controversy, still has his star-quality charisma, and Grunberg is a worthy protege for the Oscar-winning writer/actor/director.

This is a return to form for [Mel Gibson], playing a hard-edged tough-nut with personality. And it's easily his most charismatic role in over a decade.

Things start off a little too cute with that self-aware, annoying post-Pulp Fiction faux-clever tough-guy winking narration, but it kind of straightens up a bit once the story kicks in.

an entertaining but trashy crime drama

It could have been too quirky for its own good, [but] as it stands... "Get the Gringo" is surprisingly good, coming out of left field the way it did.

Get the Gringo is a gritty film with some grizzled punch. Gibson himself gives a strong performance as a hardened criminal that still has some heart.

Might not be a Lethal Weapon-style comeback for Mel the Action Star, but it works well enough as a double feature with Gibson's underrated Payback.

Gibson embraces the crazy and turns Get the Gringo into some good ol pulpy fun.

A film that's akin to a Mexican Guy Ritchie flick. The mix of gangsters and gunplay works well and there is a dry sense of humour that runs throughout most of the film's dialogue.

Gibson dusts off his tough-as-nails, devil-may-care persona

Get the Gringo sees the return of bad ass Mel, the macho-macho man, all gravelly voice, misanthropic sadness and two-steps-ahead conman.

Gibson's character gives a ten year old kid (who becomes a major character, without ever becoming a brat) a cigarette, and the kid lights it up and smokes it. Try getting MGM, Universal, Paramount or Disney to release that.

Whether there's an agenda underpinning the film or not, Gibson is clearly back in his element here, with plenty of wind still in his sails.

The near incomprehensible plot involving his dealing with crooked cops and businessman on both sides of the Rio Grande is of little interest except as an excuse for fights, chases and the anti-hero's redemption.

Love or loathe Gibson, he is hard to resist in this tantalizing tale of hard knocks, winners and losers, as he reminds us of what made him a big screen star in the first place.

Mel Gibson is back doing what he knows, playing a flawed character with redeeming qualities who is also a resourceful tough guy

The richness of the prison backdrop is a source of amazement ...described as 'the world's sh*ttiest mall' with food stalls, drugs and sex on demand, guns in plentiful supply and an intimidation-driven system
May 11, 2012
A pungent representation of Mexican torment (beyond the blaring ranchera music) with a violent twist, bringing out a particular groan to Gibson's puckish attitude the screen hasn't seen in years.
