Competent on all fronts but never dazzling, it should please genre devotees but won't cross over to a broader audience.
A spectacularly miscalculated historical epic.
A character-driven battle epic that plays more like a brightly rendered action-adventure than a starchy history lesson.
Sweeping and dynamic, if mostly unsurprising.
A lavish reminder of how fiercely proud China is of its past, and of how much more of it we'll get to see in the coming years.
Even if it's a more rewarding watch than other films of its ilk thanks to its galloping yet well-timed story-telling, it doesn't have enough idiosyncrasies to prevent it from blending in with a lot of China's other action flicks.
A respectable period action drama that frequently loses its steam to redundant scenes.
A large-scale adventure with an above-average script, God of War could be the best Asian historical epic since John Woo's Red Cliff.
God Of War's engaging storytelling is a pleasant surprise.
These films tend to be either very good or on par and this one is very much on par. The action scenes are great and that climatic face off is epic, but the silly acting moments are annoying. The film just needed to be played straight and avoid these moments, these films don't need the comic relief. I wanted to really enjoy this film but the direction of the actors failed and the only true character is the villain and the hero, the rest are relegated to nothing. This film could have been a genuine classic but fails the basic character moments, hopefully the filmmaker learns from this mistake. 19-03-2018.
