Audience Reviews for God's Little Acre

There are two movies here, two movies presented for the audience's approval at the very same time: one is Erskine Caldwell's rambling and inconsistent "big Southern novel", meant to impress with one family's struggles standing in for all of society, social concern heavy Iike fatback grease dripping in the underpinnings, yet given a light touch to make it all palatable, relatable. Unfortunately that effort never fully materalizes, leaving the dull taste of confused disappointment. But the other movie! It's as if the actors had no clue about the cheesiness of the script---and, like Rocky Balboa, came to the party regardless of the other film to absolutely own, to absolutely win. The finest performances up and down the cast, bar none, a marvel to watch, all of them on high octane nitro fuel. It's spectacular. And, it's a bit of a curiousity.

robert ryan has one of his best roles here and it's entertaining in a debauched southern gothic way but it's way too long

Sorry to say it, but this one was really bad. There are way too many sub plots that aren't well developed to begin with, and when we only get to follow each character for a short period of time, it becomes even less captivating. Sleeping pill.
