Critic Reviews for Goethe! (Young Goethe in Love)
Stylistically, the most engaging aspect of the picture is Stölzl's direction.
An old-fashioned romance that's easy to like even if you have no interest in German literature, illegal duels or the more romantic aspects of committing suicide.
Pain plus time, this film reminds us, can result in poetry.
The story of a talented but not yet mature young man who stumbles upon the topic that would lead to his fame: love, and the loss of it.
Audience Reviews for Goethe! (Young Goethe in Love)
The movie Goethe is a wonderful movie that had great plot and amazing charters. One of the scenes made me feel a little bit uncomfortable because when i had turned my head back to the movie two of the characters were doing it in the dirty while it rained . I honestly thought it was messed up how that girl was playing around with Goethe and then got engaged to the one rich guy which made him pretty depressed and then he died and the book he was writing was published after he died and it was given to his father all around it was a good movie
With Johann Goethe(Alexander Fehling) in short order flunking his doctoral exam and being rejected by a publisher, it is no wonder that his father(Henry Hubchen) sends him to the provinces to apprentice under the very watchful eye of Albert Kestner(Moritz Bleibtreu). At least, Johann makes a quick friend in Wilhelm Jerusalem(Volker Bruch) but the dancing leaves a little something to be desired. At least, until Johann bumps into Lotte Buff(Miriam Stein) and hears her sing in church. "Young Goethe in Love" is a mixed bag to say the least, starting with its visuals which include a couple of superb shots but is more often than not rather shoddy. In trying to show that a writer needs to have experience before setting pen to paper, the movie depicts Goethe's early story as little more than just another banal story of romance. That's all the while there is something much darker going on beneath the surface which while leading to a few surprises that salvage the movie also almost go unacknowledged until the postcript.
Really nice, beautiful, and essentially true story about a great mind. A classic style love story produced in a literate, artistic, and tasteful manner...much unlike most cheap Hollywood romance productions these days. Really well done film...
