I'm starting to really lose respect for the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. "Ruining their careers." ect. If people don't give fair, realistic reviews for whatever reason, then they're actually preventing people from watching great movies and this one was a fantastic family comedy. It's being rated nowadays, but you must remember this was a 1997 flick and a great one for it's time. Joe Pesci and Danny Glover pulled off the illusion of a real friendship. The way Danny is concerned and emotional for Joe's safety all the time, the way they are with each other, it's all so real. Although they play immature, not bright men in mid-life crisis, that's the characters they were meant to be and they pulled it off great. It's like a middle-aged 'Dumb and Dumber'. They're both hilarious through out the whole movie, the events that happen are hilarious and it's really how you would see two best friends in real life, all the childhood comes back and you just have fun because it's so natural and comfortable. I give this 4 and a half stars easily and I base it on when it came out. You can't take a 20 year old movie and compare it with comedies now. These are different times with different humor. When you rate, rate it next to other movies of its time. For 1997, this was a great comedy that you could watch with the whole family and just laugh, don't take it too seriously. These events from a fishing trip would never likely happen so badly in real life and that's the beauty of movies, games, ect. The fact that it is a movie and you can take it and do with it what you want, it doesn't always have to be full blown realism.
