Classic. On Blu-ray.

This ambitious look at the creation of the CIA has a blockbuster cast, but falls short of the promised "thriller." Instead it is an over-long, convoluted mystery that leaves far too many questions to make the spy moves and counter-moves intelligible. With so many leaps back and forth in time in the narrative, it would have helped if the characters showed more visual signs of aging, and not all of the actors were believable when portraying their youngest incarnations.

The Good Shepard (2006) C-167m. ?? D: Robert De Niro. Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin. Long, boring drama (from a screenplay by Eric Roth) unsuccessfully (and very torpidly) tackles story behind corrupted Central Intelligence Agency, and illustrates man who witnessed it all. What a cast! What a smart story! What a disaster! A real letdown from De Niro who scored big with THE BRONX TALE, this time his story is muddled, confusing, and tedious. Many familiar faces run throughout, who serve mostly as a distraction, since viewer has absolutely no idea what the hell is actually going on. And it drags on forever! Good job on the cinematography, though.

This movie is twice as good as 9/10 of the movies rated higher on this site.

Reviewers notwithstanding, this spy drama keeps your interest from beginning to end. Also, the elite origins of the OSS and the CIA. Our biggest blunders were made by Ivy League men with great credentials

It was a good film, the actor lift his country to United Kingdom only with one motive protect his country.

This movie is Robert De Niro's second turn at directing. It's got an interesting plot: basically the beginnings of the CIA and how one man is life affected by it. It's got a good cast. De Niro has captured each time and place in the movie in a good way but at 3 hours it's a bit too long and too slow. The main character is very stoic which makes it go even slower and the ending is not eventful. However if you like long espionage type films you might want to give this a try.

A slight over reach but well acted and intense.

A very fine piece of filmmaking helmed by Robert De Niro, that is ambitious and emotive in chronicling the semi-fictionalized birth of counter-intelligence in CIA. The blessed actor/director also has no small aid from a very competent cast, consisting of a whopping 7 Oscar winners.

Superlative multilayered portrait of the psychological price paid by betrayal. Scandalously patronised by the critics at the time of its theatrical release it urgently deserves reappraisal. Acting, cinematography, script and DeNiro's direction are all masterful.

We tried to watch this boring movie last night - turned it off after 1/3 through, and still had no idea what was present day and flash backs, etc. So much told through glances, camera zooms on 1 person, etc.

Very Ambitious. And very well acted. But the pace is very slow and tedious. The movie never quite gets to the point.

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

Despite all the low ratings on this page, The Good Shepherd is a top notch espionage film. For anyone highly educated or well studied in the USA's involvement in WW2 and the Cold War, this film is sure to excite you. It's also extremely interesting to see how the CIA formed.

Needs more than one viewing to soak it all in. It's slow but for good reasons. Epic performance by Demon.

Well hello boys and girls. "The Good Shephard" unfortunately was a very big disappointment especially since it is DeNiro's second time in the director's chair since "A Bronx Tale." The performances are good, but it's still not enough to hold up with this very slow moving drama of the rise of the C.I.A.
