Movie Info

A tender coming of age story of two brothers thrown into turmoil by their father's declining health, GRAND DÉPART reveals a young man looking to his future, while struggling with his past. Between his domineering brother Luc (Jérémie Elkaïm) and his incorrigible father (César winner Eddy Mitchell), Romain (Pio Marmaï) finds that he can't go on being the boy who does what is expected of him. Approaching 30, Romain decides that it's time to face his family as an adult and, in the process, learn more about himself than he ever imagined. (c) Rialto

The director, Nicolas Mercier, has failed to grasp how repellent his own protagonist seems to us.

A bittersweet tale of sibling rivalry about a couple of polar-opposites endeavoring to bury the hatchet for the sake of their rapidly-expiring dad.

While [Grand Départ's] protagonist spends most of his time onscreen wringing his hands, the filmmakers barely seem to have lifted a finger.

The accouterments are incessantly elegant but do not disguise the hollowness at the heart of this labored family study.

Audience Reviews for Grand départ

½

I like its appropriate length + narrative speed, its bitter-sweet tone of story-telling; furthermore, I like Pio + Jérémie.
