Emily DuGranrut In Review Online Oct 24, 2026
An immensely entertaining, high-stakes, well-crafted film that is much more about humanity, about how power and money and religion corrupt, and about the lengths people will go to see their name in lights, than it is about the game of chess. Go to Full Review

Nasri Oct 15, 2026 The movie was great but the theatre was extremely cold and unnecessarily cooled down to well below 68F! Why?? There were only 5 people there?! See more Charilaos Aneziris Oct 15, 2026 I liked that it was an actual documentary about real people, the top chess players I really admire. Very informative and lots of fun. See more jesse v Oct 14, 2026 chess be troubling. honestly the best documentary I've seen in theaters this season with S-class videographers and editors. though, when will chess be compatible on touch screens? also who knew that a woman marketer would create the snowball on freestyle chess AND BE THE TRUE VILLAIN? a fourth of this film is mainly the backstory of Wesley, and yet his sister only appears in the first half of the first chapter. the second chapter has a very large of characters to keep up, i wished it was split into two. the third chapter opens with heavy psychological topics. i wish there were more consistent character travel instead of hopping to different environments every third scene. i wished there was more backstory to the marketer woman, and explore why there aren't women in these organizations. the third chapter is more visual style and fancy shots than needed to be honest. the ending felt very rushed unfortunately and just emphasizes the need to have this as tv season instead. also #JeansLivesMatter See more BobGenius Oct 13, 2026 It was long like a classical game and good effort to make chess not boring like chess freestyle / 960. A nice look into some behind the scenes of the filmmakers and what chess personalities allowed. A worthy effort to make chess marketable to the global sheep. See more Nicole Oct 12, 2026 Terrific suspense, intriguing characters, fabulous musical score! See more Jaime S @RT39673888 Oct 18, 2026 I know this is meant to play as a 3-part docuseries, but even in a one-time sitting (I saw it in the movie theater), I thought the storytelling was amazing. I laughed, I shed a few tears at the end- and who knew there was so much drama and conflict in the world of chess! Lots of tension, highly entertaining, I really loved it. This was so well-directed. I hope a season 2 is in the works!! See more Read all reviews
