Movie Info

Directors Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack shot this film about the Bakhtiari tribe of southwestern Iran. Twice each year, this tribe herds over half a million animals across the treacherous waters of the Karun River. At one point, all of the tribe members must scale the 15,000-foot Zardeh Kuh mountain. This B&W film captures the simple bravery of these families as they tend to their large herds.

It is an unusual and remarkable film offering, one that is instructive and compelling but in no way a story. Yet, in this picture, there is drama interspersed with captivating comedy.

Audience Reviews for Grass

Some incredible early footage is ruined by the most condescending, annoying, stupid, immature inter-titles known to man. 5.6

A good doc. from the silent days. It's about 2 filmakers and a female journalist going on a 4 month excursion with a tribe of 50k people through Persia looking for grasslands.Really amazing footage of deserts, mountains, and rivers. The river crossing scene is breathtaking and timeless.
