As an interviewer, Ismailos doesn't probe too deep, but the 10 filmmakers (of whom, for my money, only two%u2014Agnès Varda and David Lynch%u2014qualify as "great") are more than happy to talk.

Received ideas, creative-class cheerleading, and outright schmoozing bore, but the yacht party after the Cannes screening sounds awesome!

In the end, The Great Directors is neither a manual nor a toolkit, but a miscellany that needs to be a monograph.

Apprently novice filmmaker Angela Ismailos' definition of a Great Director is one who's willing to sit or walk with her while she lobs innocuous questions and gives herself lots of awed close-up reaction shots.

Ismailos' 10 mini-profiles might have been better used as DVD extras or a cablecast introduction to an individual director's movie. It's not too late.

The chore is to blank out Greek filmmaker Angela Ismailos's clueless, indulgent voiceover and moony on-camera presence...

Its real title should be People Whose Films I Like and Who Agreed to Be Interviewed By Me on Camera.

Ismailos' film is a journey into film history that revives the dormant cineaste.

The number of interviewees makes the film a signpost survey, more meaningful to film- study newbies than veterans.

Great Directors doesn't tell you a lot about its great directors, but as a roadmap on how to live artfully, it's rather inspiring.

It should touch all those interested in the creative process.

Film lovers will feel like they're eating a banana split of cinematic ice cream when they watch Angela Ismailos's no-nonsense interview documentary.

Not much sense of purpose or unity to [director Angela] Ismailos' selection of subjects or the random strands of conversation included in her film.
