Though her choice of interview subjects is so random and the discourse so broad that this 2009 documentary never really arrives anywhere... it delights from start to finish and then evaporates.

Ismailos' 10 mini-profiles might have been better used as DVD extras or a cablecast introduction to an individual director's movie. It's not too late.

The number of interviewees makes the film a signpost survey, more meaningful to film- study newbies than veterans.

The film never comes together into a cohesive whole and, ironically enough, the clips from the directors' films sometimes slow it down.

The film jumps around in dizzying disorganization, illustrating the fact that part of what a director provides to a film is not just vision and leadership, but also, as the word suggests, a narrative direction.

If you are able to block out the director's intrusiveness, these people, edited down from 250 hours to 86 minutes, do say some interesting things.

Apprently novice filmmaker Angela Ismailos' definition of a Great Director is one who's willing to sit or walk with her while she lobs innocuous questions and gives herself lots of awed close-up reaction shots.

French bad-girl director Catherine Breillat says some interesting stuff, but what would be even more interesting is footage revealing how the novice filmmaker got to hang with the artists she calls her ''heroes.''

Received ideas, creative-class cheerleading, and outright schmoozing bore, but the yacht party after the Cannes screening sounds awesome!
