Kitsch illusionism and soaring sensation
overcomes what some might see as cheap histrionics and cheesy effects with pure emotion, helped greatly by maggie cheung's performance and the lovely score. a gorgeous gorgeous film that deserves a magnificent bluray release!
Based on ancient Chinese mythologies of two snakes turned into human. Wen-Zhuo Zhao aka Vicent Zhao (The monk) was supposed to be the second Jet Li. For some reason he wasn't as popular world-wide as Jet Li. His martial art skills is no less than Jet Li, actually, if not, better.
A couple of minutes into this movie, after seeing a group of deformed humans, a butcher's cart filled with dead animals (animals are a big part of the film) and a monk catches a spider trying to be a human and punishes him by trapping him in a pot and lifting a gondola and chucking him under it, I nodded to myself and smiled knowing I had made the right choice in renting this one. Great, bizzaro film.
