What to know

critics consensus

Gremlins 2 trades the spiky thrills of its predecessor for looney satire, yielding a succession of sporadically clever gags that add some flavor to a recycled plot. Read critic reviews

Audience Reviews for Gremlins 2: The New Batch

One of the worst sequels (and worst movies) ever made. This movie somehow has a 67% RT score? And movies like Mr. Wrong, which at least has some funny scenes, has a single-digit score. Leonard Maltin didn't like the first Gremlins, which is his right. But when they cast him in this turd and gave him a cameo, he gave this movie a BETTER review than the first. 3 out of 4 stars? No way. This movie has no plot, no point, and some of the oddest, most random creature-creations by Rick Baker imaginable. There is no reason these creatures are so wildly diverse and varied compared to the first movie. It's as if Joe Dante and gang didn't bother to explain WHY the creatures look like bats, spiders, slow-witted rednecks and others wear glasses and talk. Bizarre. Characters WHO DIED in Gremlins are back for this "sequel." A $50 million budget + unlimited creative control resulted in this piece of garbage. The studio deserved to lose 10 million at the box office. SO bad.

The original already had a little bit of that sly humour, and a hint of that sarcastic tone, but is still at its heart an actual horror movie. The New Batch though changes it up and has that light-hearted, hokey, meta-humour in spades. It's a comedy. But it doesn't suffer for it, Gremlins 2 is an absolute joy.

So freakin' stupid, and the movie knew it and tried to salvage itself by getting self-referential and ridiculous. The only really funny part was Kate starting her suicidally depressing Lincoln's Birthday story as a send-up to her most awful Christmas story in the prequel.

I never saw the need of adding some Mel Brooks recipe ingredients to this one, but it is undeniable that Gremlins 2: The New Batch was better than my expectations initially suggested, and there were some pretty interesting ideas added here and there, with the spider Gremlin being one positive highlight. It is just not the best representative sample of its kind (not even the original film). 62/100
