Movie Info

Written and directed by Yasmin Ahmad, Gubra is a sequel to his earlier film Sepet. The film concerns Orked (Sharifah Amani), who in the earlier film dealt with the death of the boyfriend she adored. Picking up years later, Orked is married to someone in the advertising world, works as a professional herself, and continues to be brought into the chaotic world of her parents. A second storyline concerns two prostitutes who attempt to better their position in life after listening to a Muslim couple who greatly encourage them. When Orked's father begins to suffer from a serious medical condition, she begins to spend even more time with her parents, and eventually meets Alan, the brother of her deceased boyfriend. Soon she must decide if she wants to continue with her marriage or give in to her feelings for the brother. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Gubra (Anxiety)

Hard to beat Sepet and does not have the same quality but still a very good movie. Very strong defense as always of Malaysia's mutlitculturalism while remarking on tensions between Chinese and Malays. And unusually for Ahmad, a movie that does not focus on teenagehood. Very strong characters but Sharifah Amani is less convincing as an adult as a teenager.
